Biomedical Science

The Biomedical Science program provides students with a foundation in biomedical science principles through exciting hands-on project-based learning.  Students investigate concepts of biology and medicine as they explore health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, and infectious diseases.

Through activities and projects, students learn about human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and research processes as they use investigative design processes to solve real health problems.  Key biological concepts, including maintenance of homeostasis in the body, metabolism, inheritance of traits, and defense against disease are embedded in the curriculum.

Students practice problem-solving with structured activities and progress to open-ended projects and problems that require them to develop, plan, document, communicate, and use other professional skills.

Examples of careers in Biomedical Sciences are Biochemist, Bioinformatics Associate, Bioinformatics Scientist, Biomedical Chemist, Biostatistician, Cell Biologist, Clinical Trials Research Associate, Clinical Trials Research Coordinator, Geneticist Microbiologist, Molecular Biologist, Pharmaceutical, Process Technician,  Regulatory Affairs Specialist, Research Assistant, Research Associate, Research Scientist, Toxicologist.

Students can earn the following credentials:

  • 3 college credits at participating colleges nationwide
  • Scholarships at participating Project Lead the Way (PLTW) colleges
  • OSHA General Safety Certification
  • Amgen Industry Certification
  • PLTW Certification

Students are eligible for membership in SkillsUSA Career & Technical Student Organization and as a member can participate in local SkillsUSA competitions
